Manchester United slips to fourth in the standings, but could have been fifth if not for a fantastic comeback. Their opponent, Tottenham Hotspur, raced to a three-goal lead after an hour and looked to be heading for three points. However, Ella Toone and a brace from Fridolina Rolfö in the final 16 minutes rescued a point. The Swedish forward tapped in the equalizer in the fourth minute of added time in what could be a vital point when the season is over.

Arsenal stayed above the Red Devils after their 3-1 win over Everton on Saturday. Katie McCabe scored the opener with what could be the Goal of the Season in the WSL. Chelsea and Manchester City had routine wins, with the champions beating Brighton & Hove Albion 3-0, and Manchester City putting six past Aston Villa. Khadija Shaw scored four to continue her goal-scoring form. She now leads the goalscoring standings with 12, seven in front of second place.

Liverpool missed the chance to move off the bottom of the table as they drew 2-2 with second-bottom West Ham United. They may have been happy with something, playing with one player less for 80+ minutes. Beata Olsson scored the equaliser for the Reds in the 87th minute.

WSL TO REVIEW TV SLOTS AFTER 2025/26 SEASON

The Women’s Super League is set to review its broadcast slots after the current 2025/26 season. The announcement comes after an audience of 59,000 watched the Saturday lunchtime kick-off between Arsenal and Liverpool, broadcast on Sky Sports. It’s not the first time the said timeslot has seen low viewership.

The WSL is set to meet in the summer to review the plan with the main broadcast holders, Sky and BBC. They already decided before this season to drop the 6:45 p.m. GMT Sunday kick-off slot after consultation with the clubs. That may be the same for the Saturday lunchtime slot, which does clash with the men’s Premier League game on TNT Sports.

ADOBE WOMEN’S F.A. CUP

Round 3 of the Women’s F.A. Cup took place over the weekend. Wins for Crystal Palace, Newcastle United, Charlton Athletic, and others mean they move into the fourth round. Nottingham Forest beat Wolverhampton Wanderers 2-1, a game shown live on free-to-air channel 4 in the UK.

The draw for the fourth round took place on Monday, 15th December. Out of the 16 games, there were some standout ties. Holders Chelsea face WSL2 side Crystal Palace, while there are two all-WSL games: Arsenal vs Aston Villa and Tottenham Hotspur vs Leicester City. Fourth-tier side London Bees will welcome WSL Liverpool with a chance to cause a huge shock. The games will be played over the weekend of Saturday 17 and Sunday 18 January 2026.

WOMEN’S BUNDESLIGA

On the penultimate match day before the winter break, we saw some high-scoring games. Bayern Munich put on a goal-scoring spectacle against HSV, as we have come to expect from them. The Munich team won 6-0. An own goal by HSV and five different goal scorers ensured a flurry of goals. Giulia Gwinn, Georgia Stanway, Klara Bühl, Pernille Harder and Lea Schüller all found the net. This secured them their 12th win in 13 games and put them six points clear at the top of the Bundesliga table.

Next up is VfL Wolfsburg, who also recorded a resounding victory at the weekend. The Wolves beat Nuremberg 6–1. Alexandra Popp scored her eighth goal of the season – only Werder Bremen's Larissa Mühlhaus has scored more goals so far this season. They also scored. Werder Bremen beat Bayer Leverkusen 1-0 thanks to a converted penalty. This means they are now unbeaten in seven games and deservedly sit in third place.

Selina Cerci once again demonstrated how important she is to Hoffenheim: in the 3–2 victory over Leipzig, the 25-year-old international set up one goal and scored another herself. She has also scored eight times this season.

Carl Zeiss Jena caused a surprise. The bottom team in the table beat 1. FC Köln 1-0, securing their first win of the season. With six points, they remain at the bottom of the table, but at least they picked up some important points in the potential relegation battle. SGS Essen also scored points, playing out a 0-0 draw against SC Freiburg. Union Berlin secured a critical point in their match against Frankfurt. They fought hard to earn a 2-2 draw against sixth-placed Frankfurt, allowing them to maintain their lead over SGS Essen.

LIGA F

Atletico Madrid failed to win for the third consecutive game, drawing 2-2 at Eibar. It was a valuable point for the team near the bottom, who also made it back-to-back games without a defeat. Atletico held 73% possession but could only generate three shots on target, one of which was a penalty. They are now four points behind Real Sociedad and the third European spot, after Sociedad beat Deportivo La Coruna 3-0 at home.

The top two also earned convincing wins. Real Madrid beat Granada 3-0, with Alba Redondo scoring a brace. Barcelona scored five times at Levante Badalona. The home side levelled the game through Lorena Navarro after Ewa Pajor opened the scoring. After that, it was plain sailing for the champions who lead Las Blancas by seven points going into the winter break.

Espanyol jumped up to mid-table with a 1-0 win over bottom-of-the-table Levante. Athletic Club is in splendid form at the moment. They beat Madrid CFF 2-0 on the road, making it five games unbeaten, which included four wins. They now sit in eighth place, having been second from bottom at one point.  Sevilla also picked up three points, keeping them in sight of the European places.

SERIE A

In Italy, the last matchday before the winter break was on the weekend. And apart from AS Roma, who have pulled away somewhat in first place, the league is fascinating. Juventus climbed to second place in the table. They beat Napoli 2-1 after trailing 0-1. Shortly before half-time, Napoli took the lead through Kozak. Beccari equalised in the first minute after the break, and Cambiaghi scored the winning goal in the 86th minute.

AS Roma remain at the top of the table with a five-point lead. They secured another three points against bottom-of-the-table Ternana with a confident 2-0 victory. The in-form Romans took the lead in the first minute of the game. And just 25 minutes later, Corrado scored an own goal to make it 2-0. Inter moved up three places compared to the last match day. The Nerazzurre won the Derby della Madonnina against city rivals AC Milan 5-1. Milan took the lead first, and the score was 1-1 at half-time. But then Inter turned up the heat, scoring four goals in the second half. Four of Inter's five goals were set up by Belgian international Tessa Wullaert.

Como lost 1–3 to Fiorentina, dropping from second to sixth place, while Sassuolo won 1–0 against Genoa and climbed out of the relegation zone. Lazio won 1–0 against Parma and is now in fifth place, ahead of Como. Parma, on the other hand, was unable to climb out of the bottom of the table before the winter break. Serie A continues on 18 January. Before Christmas, the Italian teams are still in action in the Coppa Italia.

ARKEMA PREMIERE LIGUE

Paris Saint-Germain needed a 90+3 goal to draw 2-2 at home to third from bottom Montpellier. Rose Kadzere put the away team in front with her brace, but couldn’t hold on to the win, with Jackie Groenen scoring the equaliser. They are now five points behind the league leaders after OL Lyonnes won 7-0 against Le Havre. Kadidiatou Diani and Tabitha Chawinga both scored twice in the tenth win of the season for the champions.

Paris FC failed to capitalise on their city rivals dropping points, drawing 0-0 at Strasbourg. The away team had an xG over 1.11 but could not find the back of the net. Nantes did take advantage of the two Paris teams' failures, beating Les Marseillaises 3-0 at home. First-half goals from Lucie Calba, Mariam Toloba, and Melissa Bethi were enough as the home team dominated.

ALISHA LEHMAN ON EQUAL PAY

Equal pay in women's football is a topic discussed time and again. During a Q&A session with her 16.1 million Instagram followers, Swiss star player Alisha Lehmann also weighed in on the issue. ‘I'm not saying that we have to earn as much as men,’ she said. However, ‘all women should earn enough to make a living.’

There are still many female footballers who have to work outside football. ‘That's what needs to change in all countries,’ said Lehmann, who currently plays for Como in Serie A. Although many share this opinion, the footballer is certain: ‘I'm going to get a lot of hate again for answering this question.’ What do you think about this topic? Let us know!

BUSINESS CORNER

For weeks, Trinity Rodman has been the dominant topic in American women's football. Now, a solution seems to have been found for her to remain in the NWSL. The NWSL Board of Governors wants to introduce a new rule for paying individual stars. According to this rule, it should be possible to pay so-called ‘high-impact’ players more than the fixed wage cap.

This ‘high impact’ status would allow teams to pay up to an additional US$1 million per year, with only a small portion of this money counting towards the remaining salary cap. The exact qualifications a player must have to obtain this status are not yet clear. But it is already fairly sure that Trinity Rodman would meet them. We are now waiting for the NWSL Players Association's opinion, which will have the final say.
