Head Coach Changes & More - June 10, 2025

Can anyone stop Kansas City Current? And will the UEFA Women's Euro in Switzerland lead to a major upswing in women's football? Read more here!

England - WSL

The WSL saw revenue climb 34% (£65 million) in the 2023-24 season, while all 12 teams generated £1 million (€1.18 million) in revenue each during that season, according to analysis from the Deloitte Sports Business Group. Reports suggest that it could reach £100 million in 2026, despite a decline in fan attendance.

Tottenham Hotspur and head coach Robert Vilahamn have parted ways, ending just under two seasons with the club. Reports over the weekend suggested he would be sacked after a season of poor results, which saw them finish second from bottom.

Chelsea defender Millie Bright will undergo minor knee surgery, the club has confirmed. The veteran centre-back pulled out of the England squad for the Euros, and it is hoped she will be ready for the new season.

Spain - Liga F News

Real Madrid Femenino head coach Alberto Toril will not return for the 2025-26 season. Barcelona made it back-to-back Copa de la Reina titles at the weekend, beating Atletico Madrid 2-0. Clàudia Pina finished her impressive season, scoring both goals in the final played in front of 7,850 spectators at the Estadio El Alcoraz. The victory means the Catalan club completed the domestic treble in the 2024/25 season.

Norwegian Vilde Bøe Risa has extended her contract with Atletico Madrid. The midfielder will be available for the 2025-26 season, having signed from Manchester United in 2023.

Germany - Frauen-Bundesliga

Sara Doorsoun is retiring from the German national team, just before the European Championships in Switzerland. The 33-year-old announced her decision on Instagram. "It was clear that this day would come at some point. But to be honest, it wasn't the plan for it to happen before the tournament in the summer," she wrote. However, it was "not a headless or defiant decision"; she had the "feeling that now is the right time for me".

After almost ten years in the DFB team, national coach Wück has only included the Eintracht player in the extended squad. "Unfortunately, she has been set back by her injury in recent months during a crucial phase of preparation for the tournament," reads the official statement from the federation.

Doorsoun played 59 international matches for the German team. In 2016, the defender and her team won the bronze medal at the Olympic Games - her greatest success with Germany.

France - Première Ligue News

OL Lyonnais announced their new manager for the upcoming season, with Jonatan Giráldez leaving his post at NWSL side Washington Spirit. The former Barcelona coach spent less than a year in the United States. Entrepreneur Michele Kang owns both the Spirit and Olympique Lyonnais through her multi-club company.

Forward Marie Katoto will make the move from Paris Saint-Germain to league rivals OL Lyonnais. A product of the PSG academy, the Parisians lose a valuable player to the Première Ligue champions. The 26-year-old is the club’s leading scorer with 180 goals in 223 games. It’s a blow for PSG, who finished ten points behind their rivals last season.

United States - NWSL

Kansas City Current continues to dominate the league after eleven games. With a 2:1 victory against Gotham FC, they picked up their ninth win of the season. No wonder, then, that Kansas striker Temwa Chawinga was named Player of the Month for May. She leads the scoring charts with seven goals in eleven games. Last season, the 26-year-old was already awarded the "Golden Boot" and voted the league's MVP.

Two pieces of good news from the NWSL: Rose Lavelle returns to the pitch after six months out injured! The 30-year-old US international underwent ankle surgery in December. Lavelle was substituted in the 74th minute against Kansas City Current. The Gotham midfielder almost scores after just five minutes on the pitch - but in the end, she has to settle for a defeat.

Savy King is also back - but only in the stands for the time being. After the Angel City defender collapsed on the pitch during the game against the Utah Royals, the 20-year-old had to undergo heart surgery. This was successful, and now she has watched her club's game against the Chicago Red Stars and received a warm welcome. It's great to see them both again!

Italy - Serie A Femminile

Goal achieved: The Italian team clinches a place in the Nations League thanks to a commanding 4:1 victory over Wales. The Italians can thus complete their final rehearsal before the European Championship in Switzerland.

Coach Andrea Soncin has also made his preselection for the European Championship preparations. There are hardly any changes to the Nations League squad. Giada Greggi returns after successful shoulder surgery. The 35 players will now go to a joint vacation camp in Sardinia before training together in Coverciano. On June 25, Soncin will announce the 23 players he will be taking to the European Championships.

Around the Other Leagues

In the NSL, Montreal Roses kept their three-point lead at the top of the standings with a 2-0 win over Vancouver Rise: Stephanie Hill and Charlotte Bilbault with the goals. There were also wins for the Ottawa Rapid FC and Calgary Wild FC, with both teams trailing first-place Montreal by three points in the standings.

Quote of the Week

“I am very grateful for all the fantastic memories and moments I could experience with the national team.”

Eintracht Frankfurt and German Sara Doorsoun-Khajeh, after announcing her retirement from international football, following being informed she would not make the EURO squad.

UEFA Nations League Semi-Finals Set

The teams that will compete in the semi-final stage of the UEFA Nations League have been set. Germany will take on France, while regaining champions Spain will face Sweden. The games will be over two legs and take place in October.

Other News

Midge Purce has been included in AdWeek's list of the "2025 Most Powerful Women in Sports". The US-American was recognised for her influence on and off the pitch. The 29-year-old currently plays for Gotham FC in the NWSL and played a vital role in the team's 2023 title win.

Purce is a well-known voice in soccer: in 2022, she was a driving force in the negotiations for equal pay in the US women's national team and is a co-founder of the Black Women's Player Collective.

But she is also a driving force off the pitch: last year, she co-produced the documentary series "The Offseason", which followed various NWSL players. In May, she walked the Sports Illustrated Swim Week runway as a model and delivered the opening monologue at the Ambassador Theatre on Broadway. The AdWeek nomination recognises Purce's accomplishments.
